Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA)

As a pivotal division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) operates as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a focused mission: to unite and empower fire service leaders. The organization is committed to tackling the biggest challenges in first response by fostering a collaborative ecosystem where relationships, innovative systems, and advanced technologies can be developed to better protect personnel and communities across the western United States and beyond.

A primary vehicle for this mission is the "Daily Dispatch," WFCA's flagship newsletter and a vital source of information for the American fire service. Distributed free each weekday to over 40,000 professionals, it features curated national news, career opportunities, and cooperative purchasing updates. Recognized by all seven U.S. Divisions of the IAFC, the newsletter serves as a powerful tool for agencies to attract top talent and for leaders to stay informed on an ever-evolving industry landscape.

Addressing the unique environmental challenges of its region, WFCA developed the WFCA Fire Map, a public-facing tool providing near real-time situational awareness of wildland fires. The map integrates data from multiple authoritative sources—including PulsePoint 911 dispatch calls, NIFC’s IRWIN feeds for incident boundaries, and FIRIS for predictive modeling in California—into a single common operating picture. This service, alongside educational initiatives like Fire Tech University and the annual IGNITE Symposium, underscores WFCA’s commitment to leveraging technology and data to improve decision-making and operational response.

For public safety leaders, a partnership with WFCA translates into direct operational value. A fire chief can use the Fire Map to monitor emerging wildfire threats, leverage the "Daily Dispatch" to recruit for key positions, and attend the IGNITE Symposium to explore next-generation fire technology. Through its published articles on topics like AI wildfire modeling and federal policy, WFCA provides the strategic foresight leaders need to adapt their pre-planning and operational strategies effectively.

What truly distinguishes WFCA is its ability to harness regional leadership for national impact. While its roots are in serving the fire service of the West, its programs and influence resonate nationwide. By convening fire chiefs, technology partners, and policymakers, WFCA serves as a crucial hub for innovation, facilitating the development and adoption of solutions that address the most pressing needs of the modern fire service, from recruitment and retention to wildfire management and technological advancement.
