Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI)

Established in 1925, the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) holds the distinction of being the oldest continuous fire training institution in the United States and serves as the statutory State Fire Academy for Illinois. Its enduring mission is to help firefighters do their work more effectively and safely through a combination of training, education, information, and research. For nearly a century, IFSI has been a foundational partner to fire departments across the state, nation, and world, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to meet evolving public safety challenges.

IFSI’s product is a highly-developed and comprehensive portfolio of accredited training programs that directly address the operational needs of fire and EMS agencies. The curriculum spans from foundational firefighter certification to advanced special operations and command-level instruction. Key offerings include hands-on training in Engine and Truck Company Operations, Driver/Operator skills, Hazardous Materials response, and a full suite of Technical Rescue disciplines like confined space, trench, and structural collapse. Critically, these courses lead to nationally recognized certifications through the Pro Board and IFSAC, providing departments with a reliable benchmark for competency and enabling professional mobility for their personnel.

In a unique and highly effective delivery model, IFSI brings its training to where firefighters work. While its 28-acre Champaign campus offers a world-class training environment with Class-A live-fire props and advanced rescue simulators, the institute recognizes the logistical and financial constraints faced by many departments. To solve this, IFSI maintains an active fleet of mobile training resources, allowing it to deliver high-quality, hands-on courses at fire stations and training centers across the state. This approach is so central to its mission that nearly two-thirds of its approximately 60,000 annual student encounters occur off-campus, making best-in-class training exceptionally accessible.

Beyond instruction, IFSI is a leader in applied research that directly benefits first responder safety and operational effectiveness. The institute’s research division focuses on action-oriented studies on topics that have a direct impact on firefighter health and safety in the field. This commitment to evidence-based practice means that training and tactics taught at IFSI are not just based on tradition, but are informed by cutting-edge science, from fire dynamics to responder resiliency. This integration of research and education makes IFSI a dynamic force for innovation in public safety, providing fire service leaders with a partner dedicated to advancing the profession from the ground up.
