Firefighter Cancer Support Network

Founded on the mission to fight cancer alongside firefighters and EMS professionals, the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) provides a critical lifeline to first responders and their families impacted by the disease. The organization was established to address the staggering rates of occupational cancer in the fire service, providing a comprehensive national framework for support, awareness, and, most importantly, prevention.

FCSN’s service portfolio is detailed and practical, divided into two main tracks: direct support and prevention. The cornerstone of its support program is a robust, nationwide peer-mentor network. When a firefighter is diagnosed, FCSN connects them—and their family—with a trained mentor who has personally navigated a cancer journey as a first responder. This provides invaluable, non-clinical support from someone who truly understands the job, the culture, and the disease. The network currently has over 950 active mentors and has provided direct assistance to more than 11,000 individuals. FCSN also provides extensive prevention resources, including its “Take Action Against Cancer” training curriculum, which educates firefighters on carcinogen exposure and mitigation tactics. This is complemented by a rich library of firehouse-ready materials like factsheets, posters, and training briefs.

For a fire chief or public safety leader, FCSN offers a direct, real-world solution to a complex problem. When a member of the department receives a cancer diagnosis, leadership can immediately connect them to the FCSN for trusted assistance, ensuring they receive empathetic support from a peer who speaks their language. Operationally, departments can integrate FCSN’s prevention training into their health and safety programs, creating a tangible pathway to reduce long-term cancer risk for their entire workforce. This provides a crucial benefit for both personnel wellness and agency resilience.

FCSN’s primary differentiator is its authentic, grassroots structure and singular focus. The organization is run “by firefighters, for firefighters,” which gives it immediate credibility and trust within the first responder community. While many programs offer support, FCSN’s peer-mentor model provides a unique layer of psychological and emotional assistance grounded in shared experience. This volunteer-driven approach creates a powerful, scalable support system that can respond quickly to a member’s needs, anywhere in the country.

The broader impact of FCSN is a systemic shift in the fire service’s approach to cancer. By training tens of thousands of firefighters in prevention and raising national awareness, the organization is helping to change department culture to prioritize long-term health and safety. FCSN’s work empowers individual firefighters with the knowledge to protect themselves while providing a compassionate safety net for those who are diagnosed, embodying a community-driven solution to the most significant health threat in the modern fire service.
